Murchison
A vast shire without a town.
The vast Murchison Shire, lying to the east of
Kalbarri, is the only shire in Australia without a town. In many ways
there was no reason for a town. The area, located 690 km north of Perth
and encompassing large pastoral properties specialising in cattle and
sheep, has a sparse population of a little over 200. To create a town
for the bureaucracy seemed out of all proportion to the needs of the shire.
In 1966 a residence for the Shire Clerk was built, at
what is now Murchison Settlement, with a shire office included in the building.
1985 saw the establishment of a roadhouse, the
completion of a new Shire office and museum.
Then, in 1988, Murchison was officially declared a
settlement, situated on the CarnarvonMullewa Road, about 200 km
north of Mullewa.
Things to see:
Murchison Museum
The main point of interest in the settlement is the
museum which was built out of rammed earth and timber in the style of a
typical pioneer's house. It includes a tack room and an extensive photo
collection.
