A solitary tree on the Nullarbor Plain

    Mundrabilla
One of the key road stops on the road across the Nullarbor
Located 644 east of Norseman, 68 km from Eucla and 1365 km from Perth, Mundrabilla is a stopping point on the Eyre Highway for people travelling between West Australia and South Australia. It is nothing more than a roadhouse with the usual range of facilities - petrol (which is about 50-70 per cent more expensive than it is in the eastern states), supplies, a restaurant with takeaway facilities, limited mechanical services, and adequate motel and caravan accommodation. It is sensible to book accommodation when travelling across the Nullarbor because the limited facilities are often booked out in the main season.

The railway line across the Nullarbor north of Mundrabilla

Mundrabilla was named after the first sheep station on the Nullarbor Plain. The area was first settled in 1872 when the Kennedy brothers and a man named McGill drove sheep from Albany across the desert. They had planned to establish a holding near the telegraph station at Eucla but the lack of water in the area forced them to retreat to Mundrabilla.

The location between the sea and the Hampton Tablelands is different from most of the other stopover points on the seemingly endless Eyre Highway. In an attempt to persuade travellers to stop for a few hours the owners of the Motor Hotel have created a wildlife park which includes emus, camels and an aviary.
